Last 8th June, a collaboration agreement was signed between the Archbishopric of Madrid and Madrid's Trade Fair Body in order to mark IFEMA's designation as a sponsor of the volunteer groups for World Youth Day, which is due to take place in Madrid between 16th and 21st August.
This designation will entail the use of Halls 1, 3 and 5 at Feria de Madrid as accommodation for the international volunteers who congregate in Madrid during the month of August, as well as the staging of two of the events that are scheduled to mark the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Madrid. In this respect, the facilities available at IFEMA, whose characteristics offer sufficient capacity and versatility and the services required for the staging and support of large-scale events, will host the staging of the Cardinal Rouco Varela’s Dinner with Bishops Congregated from Around the World on 17th August. It will also host a closing ceremony on Sunday 21st August, at which the Pope will bring together all of the volunteers taking part in World Youth Day.
In order to carry out World Youth Day, which is due to take place in Madrid next August, around 20,000 volunteers will be required, of whom IFEMA expects to welcome some 4,000 international volunteers from all five continents throughout the world, with large numbers travelling from Poland, Italy, Brazil and the United States. Among other services, these volunteers will be responsible for attending to the participants and collecting them from train stations, bus stations and the airport. They will also provide information to pilgrims at different points throughout the city and help out at the press and translation and interpretation centre, as well as supporting the logistical efforts for the event, helping with the organisation of different activities, accompanying authorities and coordinating different groups.
The signing ceremony for the collaboration agreement featured the participation of the Assistant Bishop of Madrid and the General Coordinator of World Youth Day, César Franco Martínez, as well as the Executive Chairman of IFEMA, Luis Eduardo Cortés, and the Managing Director of IFEMA, Fermín Lucas.
